Meaning of Socialization
Socialization is often referred to as the ‘transmission of culture’, the process by which people learn the rules and practices of social groups. Just as we learn a game by playing it, we learn life by engaging in it. Socialization is definitely a matter of learning and not of biological inheritance. People become what they are through socialization. Through the process of socialization, the individual becomes a social person and attains personality. Socialization is the process whereby the individual acquires the conventional patterns of human behaviour. Every person tries to adjust himself or herself to the condition and environment predominantly determined by the society of which he or she is a member. If he or she fails to do so, he or she becomes a social deviant and is brought back into the line by the efforts of the group of which he or she is a member. This process is known as socialization. It is the opposite of individualization.
Socialization is a process interacts with others and shaping as well as moulding his/her personality according to the prescribed norms of a society. Socialization is a process of learning that makes learners able to play social roles. It is also worth remembering that socialization is the social process by which a biological being is converted into a social being.

1. Horton and Hunt, “It is a learning process in which groups interact and learn social norms also develop his/her self.”
2. According to Ogburnand and Nimkoff, “Socialization is the process by which the individual learns to conform to the norms of the group.”
3. Maclver defines “It is the process through which social beings develops relationships and association with each other.”
4. According to Bogardus, socialization is the “process of learning to live and work together is called socialization.”
5. Ross defined socialization as “the development of the we feeling in associates and their growth in capacity and will to act together.”
6. Green defined socialization “as the process by which the child acquires a cultural content, along with self-hood and personality.”
7. H.M. Johnson states, “Socialization in the learning process that enables the learner to perform social roles.”
