RELIGION

Religious beliefs of one sort or another are present in every known society, but their variety seems to be endless. Any definition of religion must encompass their variety. However, it is difficult to produce a definition broad enough to do so without incorporating phenomena that are not normally thought of as religions. Religious institutions are a society’s important system of beliefs and practices that are standardized and formulated and widely shared and viewed as necessary and true. Religion can take many forms and directions.

DEFINITION OF RELIGION

1. According to E. B. Tylor “religion is the belief in supernatural beings.”

2. According to Durkheim, religion is “a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things uniting into a single moral community all those who adhere to those beliefs and practices.”
