Panchayati Raj: Definition

DEFINITION OF PANCHAYATI RAJ

Panchayati Raj is a system of governance in which gram panchayats are the basic administration units. It has 3 (three) levels: village, block and district.

“Panchayat” literally means an assembly of five wise and respected elders (called PANCHs) chosen and accepted by the village community. Traditionally, these Panchayats settled disputes between individuals and villages. As such, only a few cases used to go to the Police. This system works efficiently till now in majority of the Villages. The modern Indian government has made good use of this system and has decentralized several administrative functions to the village level, empowering elected gram panchayats with legal powers to work for the betterment of the Villages and the Villagers. Such Panchayats also get Fund Allocation from the Government.
